Replacing Hollow Knight’s silent Knight with Hornet changed Silksong’s writing workload. In a 2019 development update, Team Cherry explained that a protagonist who could answer other characters required substantially more dialogue.
The conversations now included Hornet’s responses, rather than only what other characters said to the player. Team Cherry reported that the extra writing had brought unexpected challenges.

A speaking protagonist, an optional story
The team wanted players to seek out the narrative if they chose, while allowing those focused on exploring and fighting to ignore nearly all characters. Hornet’s replies expanded the conversations without making every conversation compulsory.
The update also includes Nintendo’s Treehouse demonstration of the 2019 demo, with footage of Moss Grotto and Deep Docks.
