A NEWSLETTER BY @VIDEOARTGAME AND @MEMORYCARDFILES
I’m Alex, the curator behind @VideoArtGame and @memorycardfiles.
Every Thursday, we share gaming art and use it to explore the stories behind great games. Made by a gamer for gamers, artists, and devs.
THE THURSDAY LETTER / ISSUE 01
The Moonlight Greatsword has travelled through FromSoftware’s games for decades. In issue #1, we’re following that history, including the fake version that caught some players out.
ALSO IN ISSUE #1
Sora couldn’t jump in an early Kingdom Hearts prototype. Nintendo’s developers staged a sword fight to work out Zelda’s lock-on combat. We’ll follow both stories through the artwork that led me to them.
One letter each Thursday. Open the original artwork and follow the sources behind each story.
THE 2025 ART SHELF
Some of my favourite work from the posts I shared on @VideoArtGame and @memorycardfiles in 2025. These are artists I keep returning to. Find a game you love, then see who’s drawing it.
BEHIND THE GAMES
A few first-hand accounts worth opening. These are the interviews and commentaries I keep coming back to when a game makes me wonder how it was built.
BOOKS & COMICS / THE READING SHELF
Books that make the artwork worth a closer look. Open the publisher previews before deciding what belongs on your shelf.

THE DIARY / CHECKED 16 OCTOBER 2026
Some events are for playing games; others are for the people making them. Here’s my 2026–27 planning list, with a reason to consider each one and a direct link to the organiser.
This is a selection, not an exhaustive industry calendar. Only organiser-confirmed dates are listed. Read what your ticket includes before arranging travel.
OPEN ROLES / CHECKED 16 OCTOBER 2026
A few roles I’d actually read past the title. There’s an entry-level publishing opening here, as well as experienced art jobs. I’ve included the restrictions that can decide whether a role is worth your time.
These roles were accepting applications when checked, but availability can change. Apply through the employer’s page. Read the location restrictions and confirm the contract terms before proceeding.
NO CONFERENCE PASS REQUIRED
Watch developers explain how they built their games, or open the pitches and design documents they used along the way.
Browse original game pitches and design documents. Preview each entry, see who created it, then open the source file.
Start with Grim Fandango’s puzzle plan or the deck Outerloop used to pitch Thirsty Suitors. Each entry explains what the document is and flags spoilers.
Find a developer talk by game or subject. Each entry explains who’s speaking and why I’d watch it, with a running time so you can plan the session.
Start with the design changes that shaped Into the Breach, then compare how Valve approached Portal’s puzzles. Useful chapters let you jump to a particular part of a talk.
