Hi-Fi RUSH is a rhythm-action game with 3D characters and environments styled to resemble a cartoon. Tango Gameworks’ Kosuke Tanaka and Takashi Komada explain the renderer behind that look in this GDC 2024 session.

The team customised Unreal Engine 4’s rendering stages and added its own, applying toon shading to the whole world while targeting 60 frames per second at native resolution.

This is a technical pick, not a general making-of interview. I’d choose it if you want to understand how lighting, comic-style shading and shadows contribute to the art direction. The chapter links let you pick one of those subjects without committing to the full hour.
