Hollow Knight takes you through Hallownest, a ruined kingdom inhabited by insects. Wanderer’s Journal returns to those places as an illustrated travel diary, following the chronicler Ellina rather than reproducing the game’s route as a walkthrough.

The 160-page hardcover was created by Kari Fry and Ryan Novak in collaboration with Team Cherry. Fangamer lists environments, characters, enemies and wildlife among its subjects.

Look at the residents, not just the cover

The sample spread below introduces Dirtmouth’s inhabitants with individual portraits and short observations. Elderbug and Iselda get space as people the traveller has met, not simply icons marking services on a map. That approach is what interests me here.

I’d browse this after exploring Hallownest yourself: a book covering its regions and inhabitants can reveal things you haven’t found. And I wouldn’t pick it expecting Team Cherry’s production sketches or interviews. This is a guide to the fictional world, not an account of how the developers built it.
