In Slay the Princess, a mysterious voice tells you to kill a princess imprisoned beneath a cabin, claiming she’ll end the world otherwise. Who you believe and what you do change the story, including the princess herself.

The Art of Slay the Princess doesn’t arrange its pictures as a straight gallery. Its 250-plus pages use a choose-your-path structure: you follow directions to other pages, echoing the choices in Black Tabby Games’ horror story.

Fangamer describes a selection of the artist’s favourite drawings, accompanied by commentary on making the game. The illustrations were drawn with pencil on paper. Abby Howard is the game’s sole artist; Tony Howard-Arias handles the programming, and they write together.

The page directions are part of the design

The published preview below shows a sequence of character drawings and dialogue panels. At the bottom, an instruction sends the reader to another numbered page after a death. That’s the detail I’d look at first: the book asks you to navigate, rather than only turn the next page.

Spoiler warning: the interior previews reveal character forms and scenes from the game.

I’d put this on the list for someone interested in how the pencil drawings work as a branching narrative. I haven’t reviewed the full book, so the public previews are the basis for this pick, not a claim about every chapter.
